EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Western Michigan's Iris Campbell took first place in the 400-meter dash to highlight the Broncos' performance at the Spartan Invitational on Saturday.

Campbell took first with a time of 55.87 seconds in a strong head wind, nearly a second better than Michigan State's Jellisa Westney. She also took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.22 seconds.

"Running a time like that in the wind and the weather we had today was pretty impressive," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "Today was all about competing. When the weather is like it was today you just throw out the marks and focus on beating the person in front of you and I think we did a good job of that today."

WMU also took first and second in the shot put. Junior Andrea Hiler edged out her classmate Chelsea Gerbers by a single centimeter with a distance of 14.06 meters (46-1.50). Gerbers claimed second with a distance of 14.05 meters (46.1.25). Hiler also took third in the discus with a distance of 48.97 meters (160-8).

Sophomore Lindsey Hufnagel continued her strong start to the outdoor season by taking third in 400-meter hurdles and fourth in the javelin. In the long hurdles she finished with a time of 1:02.65 in just her third time ever competing in the event. In the javelin she tossed 35.34 meters (115-11) in her first time in the event this season.

Sophomore Becca Peacock took third overall in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:06.52. Alex Forsythe took fifth overall just behind her at 18:14.08 despite battling high winds and snow.

The Broncos head to the University of Tennessee for the SeaRay Relays on Thursday.
