ILLINOIS - The western Michigan men's tennis team opened its conference season 2-0 on the road on Friday, earning a 5-2 victory over Northern Illinois and a 7-0 win over Chicago State. With the wins, the Broncos improve to 16-7 overall, and extend their season-long win streak to seven matches.
The Broncos opened the day with their first conference win of the season, defeating the Huskies at the NIU Tennis Courts in DeKalb. Western Michigan began with a victory in the doubles session, taking two of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point for the Broncos. Nadin Indre and Ross VanderPloeg took the No. 1 doubles match from the Huskies, beating Frederic Cadieux and Maksym Lagutin 8-1. The point was clinched when Jim Beckwith and Aaron Wong survived a tiebreaker with Max Phillips and and Jovan Zelkovic, taking the breaker 9-8 (6) to clinch the point for the Broncos.
Nadin Indre earned an impressive win over Dor Amir in the No. 1 singles, beating Amir for the second straight meeting with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Aaron Wong extended his overall win streak to 10 wins with a win over Max Phillips at No. 3, winning 6-3, 6-4; Wong has now won five straight singles and doubles matches, respectively. Pablo Mora got back on the winning track with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Simon Formont at No. 5 singles, and Andrew Cahn finished the scoring for the Broncos when he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lagutin at No. 6 singles.
The nightcap in Chicago proved to be just as beneficial to the Broncos, as WMU went to Chicago and swept the Chicago State Cougars 7-0 at the HF Racquet Club. The day began with the Broncos taking the first two doubles matches of the night; Wong and Beckwith beat Rashley Yeremia and Luis Ulloa 8-1, and Greiner and Indre clinched the victory with a 8-2 win over Mario Noboa and Sergiu Muresan at No. 1 doubles.
Beckwith earned his third overall win of the day at the No. 6 singles position, beating Ulloa 6-1, 6-0 to open the singles scoring against the Cougars. Indre downed Muresand 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to make it a 3-0 match, and Pablo Mora beat Jean Paul Jones 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to clinch the match victory. Wong beat Julian Chavez 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match to run his overall win streak to 12, Cahn earned his second singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Yeremia, and Greiner closed the shutout with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Noboa at No. 2 singles.
