EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Western Michigan exploded for three goals in the second period with five different Broncos scoring in a 5-2 rout of Michigan State in front of 5,668 fans at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night.
WMU picked up its first win at Michigan State since Feb. 17, 2007 on the night.

Shane Berschbach,
Nolan LaPorte,
Chase Balisy and
Colton Hargrove all lit the lamp as the Broncos registered their highest offensive output since their 5-1 win over Michigan on Jan. 26.
Frank Slubowski made 20 saves on the night and didn't surrender an even-strength goal. The Broncos converted 1-of-4 power play chances while Michigan State finished the night 2-for-5. WMU outshot MSU 36-22, including a 26-12 edge from the second period on.
The Spartans drew first blood at 9:19 on a power play goal by Brent Darnell. The Broncos couldn't clear the puck from in front of the net and Matt Berry blocked shot found its way to Darnello on the left side of the net and he punched it in.
Western Michigan equalized at 17:14 on a snipe from Warda from the top of the right circle. The Michigan State transfer got the puck from
Luke Witkowski and had all sorts of room to let a wrist shot go past Jake Hildebrand's glove and into the net for his third goal of the season. Witkowski picked up his eighth assist of the season and
Mike Leone tallied his 11th.
The Broncos went on a tear in the second period scoring three goals in three minutes during the second portion of the period. Berschbach put the Broncos up 2-1 at 14:11 with his fourth goal of the season.
Dane Walters bounced a pass behind a MSU defenseman and Berschbach was in alone to beat Hildebrand on his glove side.
Just 45 seconds later LaPorte tallied his third of the year on an odd-man rush.
Dan DeKeyser skated to the top of the left circle and found LaPorte just to the right of the net and he one-timed it in to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead.
The Broncos found themselves on a 5-on-3 power play minutes later and Balisy banked in a shot off a MSU defenseman's skate and between Hildebrand's legs for his 10th of the season.
Kenney Morrison and
Dennis Brown tallied assists on the goal as WMU extended the lead to 4-1.
Hargrove netted his seventh of the season at 5:45 in the third period to push the lead to 5-1.
Mike Cichy sprung Hargrove into the zone and he skated around a MSU defenseman and finished on his forehand. Cichy tallied his 13th assist of the season and
Josh Pitt added his fifth.
