BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Western Michigan and Ferris State battled to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night with the Bulldogs winning the shootout 2-1 to earn the extra point at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
WMU (17-6-5, 13-4-3-1) picked up goals from
Dennis Brown and
Mike Leone, who also netted the Broncos' lone goal in the shootout.
Frank Slubowski made 25 saves in the tie. The Broncos finished 2-for-7 on the power play and held the Bulldogs to just one on nine chances.
Ferris State took a 1-0 lead at 14:47 on a power play goal by Matt Kirzinger. The senior forward fired a puck through a screen and into the net for his first goal of the season.
Ferris State's Dakota Klecha was ejected from the game at 3:28 into the third period causing a five-minute power play for the Broncos. Shortly after Garret Thompson took a penalty resulting in a five-on-three power play. With the two-man advantage Brown knocked in a rebound on a shot by
Kenney Morrison to tie the game 1-1.
Still with the man-advantage on the major penalty the Broncos truck again just 26 seconds later at 5:29. A shot by
Dan DeKeyser went right into Leone's chest and dropped to the ice. The senior forward spun and fired it into the top corner of the net to take a 2-1 lead.
WMU was awarded another major power play after Kirzinger was given a double-disqualification for hitting from behind and excessive roughing but the Broncos couldn't capitalize on that power play.
The Bulldogs tied it up with 43 seconds left in regulation on an extra attacker goal by Kyle Bonis. Jason Binkley fired a shot from the right point and the rebound bounced right to Bonis on the left-side of the net.
Western Michigan and Miami battle it out for first place in Kalamazoo next Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
