COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 6 Western Michigan earned the extra point in a 2-1 shootout win after a 1-1 tie with Ohio State in front of 3,885 fans at value City Arena on Friday night.

Matt Stewart scored the lone goal for the Broncos (18-7-6, 14-5-4-2 CCHA) in regulation but Mike Leone and Mike Cichy each tallied goals in the shootout to give WMU the win. Frank Slubowski made 18 saves on the night and three stops in the shootout.

Western Michigan was held scoreless on five power play chances but the Brown & Gold also shutout the Buckeyes during their four chances. Overall the Broncos outshot OSU 31-19 in the shootout win.

The Buckeyes struck first at 5:57 in the second period on Tyler Lundey's fourth goal of the season. Max McCormick fired a shot from the slot that went wide and off the glass behind the net but the rebound bounced right to Lundey just right of the crease and the freshman forward punched it in to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.

The Broncos responded with 5:54 left in the second on Stewart's first collegiate goal. Leone won the puck behind the net and brought it through the slot to Stewart, who was waiting at the top of the left circle. The sophomore defenseman unleashed a wrister that hit the cross bar and bounced down into the goal. Leone tallied his eight assist on the game-tying goal.

Western Michigan and Ohio State meet for the final time in the regular season on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
