Men's Ice Hockey WMU

WMU vs CC 11-1, WMU Quotes

Head Coach Andy Murray

On Western playing their first NCHC opponent...

"I give a lot of credit to Colorado College. They taught us a few lessons at the start of the hockey game. They were much better than us in the first so we were fortunate we only ended up being down a couple of goals. We needed to start stronger. People may say that we were sluggish because we hadn't played in a couple of weeks but I don't think that's an excuse. Colorado College came out really strong but we came out really strong. I thought we had some good puck possession in the third period. It was a great hockey game and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

On winning first NCHC game...

"You get what you deserve and I think we were deserving tonight. We kept battling back and playing hard. We know Colorad College had some tough losses here in the past two weeks and they are going to come back tomorrow full of venom and vigor."

On physicality of the game...

"I think that major hit was so early in the game that both teams had come in to the game with idea to play physical. I have not seen the hit but the referees thought it was a fair hit. It is an exciting win for us. College hockey is physical and you've got to show up and play hard."

On Sheldon Dries performance...

"I think a lot of our freshman stepped up tonight and played one of their better games this season. He had a lot of ice time for a freshman and was killing penalties. We took some penalties that we prefer not to have taken."

On offensive performance...

"I don't care if we only get one goal as long as it's one more goal than our opponent. It was a great hockey game. You feel for their team because those are two overtime losses that they had in a row. We have to make sure we respect them greatly and get off to a better start tomorrow night."

On mental toughness...

"People would say if you come back from a 2-0 deficit you have mental toughness. That's a bit of a cliche type of thing because mental toughness is playing hard all of the time. If we hadn't come back I still thought we played hard and had mental toughness."

Freshman Forward Kyle Novak

On his goal...

"There was a screen so I threw it on net. I got a good pass from Kessel right in the slot and the goalie did the rest of the work because I saw it just sitting between his legs but he put it in. It was a good first college goal."

On offensive strategy...

"This week in practice our coach had us practice shooting upstairs so when it came to game time we did that all night and it worked out for us."

On first win...

"It's great to get the first win we just have to get the sweep tomorrow."

Junior Goalie Frank Slubowski

On first NCHC win...

"It's a great start for our team. Every team in this league and it's great for us to come out like this."

On the tone at the beginning of the game...

"I think awhile for us to get our feet moving. I know I didn't like my start. Going in to the second period we knew we needed to move our feet and stay positive on the bench. It shows a lot about our leadership that we were able to come back like that."

 On Sheldon Dries performance...

"He is a battler everyday. It was great for our team and he shows a lot of character."

 On the final period...

"It's exciting when it's tied like that, one shot one goal on the line. It's intense and it's quite a game to play in."
