Broncos and Beavers Skate to 2-2 Tie

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Western Michigan battled back from a two goal deficit to tie Bemidji State, 2-2, on Saturday night at the Sanford Center in front of 2,545 fans.

Kenney Morrison and Dane Walters each netted goals in the third period to square the game at 2-2 but neither team took advantage of the extra stanza and the game finished in a tie. Frank Slubowski made 20 saves on the night as the Broncos wrapped up their non-conference schedule.

Bemidji netted their first goal of the weekend with a power play goal at 8:08 in the second period. Brance Orban fired a shot on net and the rebound got lost in the crease with Danny Mattson poked it in from the left side of the crease for his third goal of the season.

BSU took a 2-0 lead just minutes later with 9:20 remaining in the second period on a breakaway goal by Cory Ward. Ward got the puck at the blue line from Mattson and skated in on Slubowski. His shot was initially saved but a Bronco collided with Slubowski and pushed the puck into the net. The referees reviewed it and awarded Ward with the goal.

The Broncos battled back with two goals in the third period. The first came at 5:37 on the power play tally by Morrison. Dennis brown found Morrison just in front of the right circle and he fired it over Walsh's stick-side shoulder and into the net.

The game-tying goal came just over two-minutes later at 7:43 after Chase Balisy weaved through the Beaver defense and centered it back towards the net. Shane Berschbach's shot was stuffed but Walters punched in the rebound for his ninth goal of the season.

The Broncos killed off three of the four penalties they took on the night and outshot the Beavers 35-22.

Western Michigan hosts the red-hot Lake Superior State Lakers on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
