KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan women's track and field team opened the 2013 indoor season with a convincing win over Toledo in the Ice Breaker dual meet on Saturday at Read Fieldhouse.

The Broncos won 11 of the 14 events to rack up 92 points to Toledo's 55. WMU earned a bulk of its points by dominating the field events, winning all but the pole vault on the day.

“It is nice to start off with a win because it gives us that winning attitude,” said head coach Kelly Lycan. “That is one of our team goals to win all the scored meets we are at.  It is a good way to defend our home turf.  We have been practicing for a long time and they all enjoyed competing against some different colored jerseys today.  I thought they did a great job competing today.”

Junior Chelsie Gerbers won both the weight throw and the shot put on the day to earn 10 points for the Broncos. She finished with a mark of 52 feet, five inches in the weight throw with teammate Stephanie Negrete right behind her at 51 feet, two inches for second place. She tossed a distance of 44 feet, nine inches in the shot put to claim the title while fellow junior Andrea Hiler was just behind her at 44 feet, five inches.

WMU took first and third in the long jump with sophomore Kathryn Pickett claiming first place with a distance of 18 feet, five inches. Senior Iris Campbell took third with a distance of 17 feet, 10 inches. Campbell and Pickett scored again for WMU in the high jump but with Campbell claiming first place and Pickett in second.

The Broncos took first and second place in the triple jump with Chiara Allen opening the season with a jump of 38 feet, five inches. Fellow junior Whitney Freeman hit a distance of 38 feet, three inches for second.

The meet was tighter in the races with Toledo winning the mile and 60 meter dash. Campbell picked up wins in the 60 meter hurdles and the 200 meter dash. In the hurdles she ran a time of 8.88 seconds with freshman Artia Gunn on her heels at 9.01 for second place. In the 200 it was Rebecca Hall just behind Campbell, who edged Hall out by .02 seconds with a time of 25.30.

Andrea Arnold claimed the 400 meter dash by finishing .40 seconds ahead of Toledo's Sarah Woodrum for first place. Lindsey Hufnagel finished just behind Woordum for third place with a time of 58.35 seconds.

Aisha Hodge took first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.99, an Ice Breaker meet record. Junior Destinee Lukianoff took third in the race with a time of 2:18.15.

Senior Teresa Marin also claimed a win in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:31.88. Marin finished just under seven seconds in front of Toledo's Sharon Morgan, who had a time of 10:38.02. Sophomore Becca Peacock took third in the even with a time of 10:40.86.

“Teresa Marin did a really good job in the distance keeping up with the Toledo girls that started fast,” said Lycan. “She stuck her nose right in there and pulled away in the last half mile. It was really good experience for her since in some of the big races we go to, we have to start out fast like that.”

The Broncos capped off the meet with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay. Hufnagel, Arnold, Pickett and Ariel Arnold finished with a time of 3:58.45.

Western Michigan heads to the Bowling Green for the BGSU Challenge next Saturday.
