KALAMAZOO -- No. 10 Western Michigan extended its unbeaten streak to four games after dispatching Lake Superior State, 3-1, in front of the largest crowd of the year at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Mike Leone,
Dane Walters and
Dennis Brown each tallied goals in the win. The Broncos outshot the Lakers heavily for the second straight night, 41-19. WMU goalie
Frank Slubowski surrendered just one goal for the second straight game and made 18 saves on the night. The Brown & Gold finished 2-for-7 on the power play and blanked LSSU, holding them 0-for-5 and scoreless with the man advantage on the weekend.
Leone got the ball rolling for the Broncos at 2:48 into the second period. The senior forward was perched just to the right of the net and freshman forward
Josh Pitt banked a pass off the boards to him. Leone corralled the puck and jammed it into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Luke Witkowski also picked up an assist on the goal, his fourth of the season.
Domenic Monardo responded for the Lakers at 7:25 in the second period. Kellan Lain won a draw and found Monardo all alone in front of the net and he punched it in to square the game at 1-1.
Just before the end of the period Walters netted the game-winner on the power play.
Kenney Morrison fired a shot that went wide off the glass but Walters was in the perfect spot to put it in the back of the net for his team-leading 11th on the season. The goal also extended his career-long goal-scoring streak to four games.
Brown added some breathing room at 7:37 in the third period. Morrison fired a pass to him in the left circle and Brown one-timed it between LSSU goalie Kevin Murdock's legs for his first goal of the season. Morrison tallied his second assist on the night, third of the weekend and eighth of the season.
The Broncos continue CCHA play next weekend with a home-and-home series against Bowling Green. Friday night the Broncos play at BGSU, with WMU hosting the Falcons on Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena.
