KALAMAZOO -- No. 10 Western Michigan and Lake Superior State skated to a 1-1 tie with the Lakers taking the extra point in the shootout after a 2-1 win in the shootout.

The Broncos (12-5-4, 8-3-2-1) outshot the Lakers 45-25 on the night, including 9-0 in overtime but Kevin Kapalka made 44 saves on the night to earn the Perani Cup No. 1 Star. Dane Walters netted the lone goal for the Broncos.

Mike Leone also netted the lone goal in the shootout for WMU with Dennis Brown and Chase Balisy missing chances. LSSU's Domenic Monardo and Ben Power netted goals in the shootout to earn the win.

Walters gave the Broncos an early 1-0 lead at 7:03 in the first period with his 10th goal of the season. Kenney Morrison fired a shot from the left point and the puck bounced off of Kapalka and right to Walters in the slot, where he punched it in to an open net. Matt Stewart also earned an assist on the goal for his first collegiate point.

The Lakers responded in the closing minute of the first period. A Bronco turnover during a four-on-four session created an odd-man rush and Eric Drapluk found Buddy Robinson in the left circle and he found an open net to tie it 1-1 with his seventh of the season.

Neither team scored in the second period. The Broncos outshot the Lakers 13-7 and also killed off two LSSU power plays.

The two teams tied with 11 shots on the third period, while WMU dominated to extra stanza. Leone had a chance go off the cross-bar and out of play in the final minute of the overtime period but Kapalka made all nine saves to force the shootout.

The Broncos and the Lakers face off again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
