BUFFALO- Canisius maintained its undefeated season, handing the Western Michigan men's soccer team its first loss of 2012, knocking off the Broncos, 1-0, Thursday night.

Both teams attempted four first-half shots, with neither registering a goal by the midway point. The offense picked up in the second half with Canisius firing 10 shots, and WMU taking seven.

The Griffs finally found the back of the net in the 60th minute when Regan Steele scored his second goal of the season from 10 yards outs. Gavin Falconer chipped the ball out wide past the Western Michigan defense to senior Ian Buzzio, who crossed the ball back to Steele for the finish.

"We let ourselves down in a very big way tonight," commented WMU head coach Stu Riddle. "We weren't ready to compete and played with little desire, which you can't get away with at any level of play. We must credit Canisius on the way they played and out the victory."

The loss was the first in five games for the Broncos (4-0-1), who entered the week ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region. It was also the first time this season WMU had been held without a goal. The Broncos previously had outscored its opponents 10-1 in the first four games.

Canisius improved to 3-0-2, marking the first time in its program's history that the Griffs are undefeated through five games. Canisius drew a No. 3 ranking in the North Atlantic Region to begin the week.

The Broncos will look to rebound Saturday, when they host Loyola on Alumni Day at 4 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
