Broncos Fall to Nanooks, 4-1

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell to the Alaska Nanooks, 4-1, at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night but only fall to second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, just two points out of first place.

The loss ends a six game home conference game unbeaten streak that stretched all the way back to Nov. 12. The Broncos picked their lone goal from Mike Leone in the final minute of the third period but were unable to solve Alaska goalie Scott Greenham who made a game-high 37 saves.

The Nanooks struck early at the 6:27 mark of the first period on a power play goal by Michael Quinn. Quinn got the puck from Andy Taranto at the blue line and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net to give Alaska a 1-0 lead. It was the first of three points on the night for Quinn, who also tallied two assists.

Alaska went up 2-0 early in the second period at the 4:50 mark after converting on a Bronco turnover. Quinn picked up the puck and fired it down to Carlo Finucci at center ice. The Nanooks had a three-on-one rush and Kunyk found Granberg and he punched it into the net for his fourth of the season.

Early in the third period the Nanooks put the game out of reach with their third straight goal. Quinn created another turnover in the Bronco zone and found Adam Henderson in front of the net for his third of the season.

WMU head coach Andy Murray pulled goalie Frank Slubowski with 5:43 left in the game to give the Broncos an extra skater but after four minutes the Nanooks finally took advantage of the empty net and Colton Beck scored his 11th of the season to make it 4-0.

With 25 seconds left Leone banged home his first goal of the season on a pass from Trevor Elias.

The WMU homestand continues as the Broncos host Ohio State on Feb. 10 and 11 at 7:05 p.m. on both nights.
