WMU Quotes - 2/3

Head Coach Andy Murray

Overall thoughts

Tonight was the type of hockey game I expected it to be. We played Alaska-Fairbanks three times, and every game has been a battle. They're strong physically, they've got some really good players, some of the top scorers in our league, a good goaltender, and a solid defense, so it made for a solid game. We thought we had a good first period, they were really good in the second, and I thought we made some really good adjustments, and the players made some adjustments themselves, in terms of being stronger on the puck and making smarter, simpler plays in the third period, so I thought it was a solid win.

2nd period

We thought we should have gotten more out of the first period than we did, with the chances we had, we had some great chances and we didn't capitalize. To the same end, I'm sure their coaches, at the end of the second, were thinking they had better chances and could've scored. We were not as good as we needed to be in the second. Our players thought about it, we talked about it with them, we talked about the significance of the third period and what we had to do.

Power plays / penalty kills

That five on three goal, we had about a minute and forty seconds on it. You've got to be smart with it. They never cleared the zone. We kept it in the zone the whole time. I think, gradually, by the end of it, their penalty killers got worn out, they made some great plays defensively, got in the shooting lanes, took a couple of our options away from us, but we were able to hang on to the puck. I think their penalty killers could hardly stand up by the end of it. It was a lot of patience on our part, and we found  a way to score.

For tomorrow?

What we saw in the third period is the way we need to play. We need to play smart, get pucks in behind their defensemen, basically the same thing I'm sure their coaches are telling them. 2-1 game tonight, could've gone either way, we'll have to bring our best effort tomorrow night. We talked to our players, and we thought we got some valuable minutes from our freshmen tonight.

1st period

We started off and our first shift wasn't that great, but our 2nd, 3rd, 4th shifts - pretty much the rest of the period we kind of took it to them. A lot of power plays, we could've capitalized more on those. Got one that counted, so... We were clicking today. We put the preparation and time in, and we were ready to go.

2nd period

They took it to us in the second. Not one of our best periods, we finished off with a good third.

3rd period

We wanted this one. We started playing winning hockey, making great percentage plays, going back to the puck hard, it really paid off for us.

His changed goal

It hit something! I asked Chase, because he was right there. But then I asked Berschbach and he said it hit him. But just... Get in the net! I don't care who it hits!

Tomorrow night

We've got to play 60 minutes. We've got capitalize on our power play, our penalty kill was good today. We just can't have those little moments where all four lines have a bad shift, we've got to get rid of that and stick to winning hockey from the drop of the puck.

2nd Period

It's going to happen. Hockey's a back and forth game, a roller coaster. But that's the best thing abou our team, we come back from anything, we fight no matter what. It happens. If we finish the game well, that's all that matters.

The reason why we're so good defensively is because we have the puck a lot of the game.

3 goal streak

It happens. It's mind-blowing, but at the same time, not really, I always shoot the puck, and I work hard in practice, and I went through a dry spell, but that's going to happen, but I'm happy I can contribute to the team. But as long as we're winning, that's all that matters. It's always good that I can help the team. And my personal goals are really not as important as the team goals, but tonight was huge and we really needed this one, it was really important.
