SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. -- The Saturday woes continued for the Western Michigan hockey team as they fell 3-2 to Lake Superior State at Taffy Abel Arena.
The Broncos were unable to complete the comeback after going down 3-1 to the Lakers. WMU picked up goals from
Greg Squires and
Chase Balisy but are now 0-5-0 in their last five games on Saturdays. With the loss WMU misses out on a chance to win the CCHA Regular Season Championship and now can only finish as high as second place.
All the goals the Broncos gave up were on special teams, with LSSU netting two power play goals and one short-handed goal. WMU outshot the Lakers 41-19 but LSSU goalie Kevin Kapalka made 39 saves in the win.
Western Michigan took a 1-0 lead on Squires' sixth goal of the season.
Luke Witkowski used his long reach and strength to keep the puck and then passed it off the Squires and the senior winger fired a shot top-shelf on Kapalka's glove side at 14:02 in the first period. Witkowski picked up his eighth assist of the season and his third assist in three games.
The Lakers tied it up just before the end of the period on Colin Campbell's sixth goal of the season. On a power play Fred Cassiani made a good pass from behind the net to find Campbell unmarked in the right circle and he punched it past Slubowski at 18:12.
Lake Superior took a 2-1 lead at 4:42 of the second period on a short-handed goal just seconds into a WMU power play. Stephen Perfetto buried the shot low stick side for his second goal of the season on a two-on-one breakout.
LSSU added on to their lead with their third power play goal of the weekend at 3:44 in the third period. Dan Radke had a rebound land at his stick and he punched it in for his third of the season. Campbell and Cassiani each tallied assists on the goal.
Balisy added a late goal at 14:14 in the third period. He punched in a rebound from
Dane Walters but the Broncos were unable to complete the come back.
