WMU Quotes - 2/11

Head Coach Andy Murray

Overall thoughts

Ohio State came and battled, they played hard like they did last night. For three weekends in a row we've not found a way to be as good as we need to be on Saturday nights, and that's my responsibility. Leading by a goal with seven minutes left to go in the game, and let the lead slip away, that's my responsibility.

Penalty kill

We gave up three power play goals. It was terrible. To give up three power play goals to the opponent, that's not a good sign. We took a couple of penalties that were avoidable if we had been in a better position. Our penalty kill certainly didn't get the job done.

How did Balisy leaving affect the group

Chase is a very good player and we lost him, but at that point we were losing the game by a goal, we scored two and came back. We didn't want to sit back and coast. Our penalty kill is one of the top in the country, and tonight when we needed it, it wasn't there for us.

What we have to recognize is the other teams want to win, too. If you don't put forward your best effort and your best performance, and you don't play with the energy you need to have, then you're not going to get the results. We told our team 99.9% in life you get what you deserve, and we were not deserving tonight. To led a lead slip away like that should not happen; to give up three power play goals; to be leading the game in the third by a goal and making a backhand pass from the corner out to the slot in their end that allows them to attack us in transition; to have one forechecker handle four of our guys in our zone are things that we can't do. Let's credit our opponents. I asked our captains to come to me on Monday with anything we need to do to make sure that our effort is better in these second games, because that's three weekends in a row where our effort has not been good enough on Saturday nights. We've tried different approaches as coaches, and we need to make sure that we find the answer. We've got four tough games left in the regular season. Today was not a great day for us, but we'll go back to practice on Monday, and prepare to play.

Luke Witkowski

I think a couple of their goals were caused from lack of urgency. Obviously we took too many penalties, mine being one of them. We've got to be more accountable for our actions, those little details.

Penalty kills

Ohio worked hard tonight, and they got to those pucks. Just got to go back to work Monday.

Somethings got to change - what?

We need to be more accountable for our actions. We can't play a forty-minute game, we've got to play the whole sixty. Too slow to the puck, we've just got to have some urgency.

Frustrated?

To go from what the feeling was in the building when we went up three to two, to this. It's indescribable. but these moments make you cherish the moments when you win. You've just got to suck it up.

Overall thoughts

It's a tough loss.

Three straight games with goals, how's it feel?

Feeling good. It's part of my game - shoot the puck. Obviously it wasn't enough to get the win tonight.

Chase's leaving

Can't really question the refs, I mean, he did hit him from behind. I don't think it affected us too much, other than we needed him there at the end. It's a tough call, tough break, but you have to roll with it.

Discipline and penalties

We can't be taking that many penalties. We've got to cut back on that, for sure.

How to get two wins next weekend instead of one

We've just got to come ready to play every night, ready to get the three points, capitalize on our chances, be good in the defensive zone. We've just got to stay positive and stay disciplined.

Will Kessel

Goal, how's it rank for freshmen moments

It's pretty high up there, but obviously it would've been nicer if we came away with the victory. But it was a big goal for our team today, our team wanted the win really bad, but it got us back in the game.

Did you have enough energy

Both teams had great energy the whole game. There were moments where they played well and worked hard, and we matched it, but obviously they came out on top and they deserved it today.

Losing on saturdays

Our team's pretty down about it. We've been working hard during the week. And throughout the weekends we've been putting together two games that are hard working, and energy and effort is there on the team, our team is down about it. We're definitely disappointed about it. We're going to go back to work on Monday and try to come out with six points next weekend.
