WMU vs FSU - WMU Quotes 12-8

Head Coach Andy Murray

Just an exciting way to win, obviously. We played a really good team this weekend. They made some adjustments, came at us hard to night, which we would expect they would do, and we found a way to win the hockey game. It was a battle back and forth. Certainly, Ferris had their opportunities. Frank was solid in net. And we had a key power play goal from a guy that does that for us.

Well, we knew that Ferris would play very hard and physical against us. I mean, they're not a program that's gonna allow you to win two games on them. We knew they'd put up a battle here tonight. They did some grinding drills this morning in their practice, so you knew they were coming in with some intent and were going to play us really hard. That's the sign of a great team, which Ferris is. They came in here on a roll, and we found a way to beat them twice, but it got everything out of our team, it demanded the most of our team.

On Motte

You face good goaltenders in this league all the time and we seem to be making them look pretty good this year, too. We're hitting them with shots. But he played very well, we had our problems putting the puck in the net, and one of the reasons is the opposing goaltenders have been good and we haven't been efficient enough. So he played very well for them. He's a good goalie.

On special teams

Certainly, our penalty kill last night, we were disappointed with the one goal we gave up. It was on a breakaway, and you know again tonight for two periods our powerplay was not very good. In fact, we got scored on at the end of it, as their guy came out of the penalty box, and that's quite often what happens when you don't have a real good power play. We didn't work hard enough at it, we weren't efficient enough. But in the third period, when we had to have it, when it was on the line, we seized the opportunity when they took those penalties and made a couple plays and found the back of the net.

On Elias

Trevor just brings a smile to your face the way that he plays the game of hockey. I think our student body, our fans, really appreciate what he brings to the rink every night. One example of grit, determination, he was going to try and kill the clock all by himself against five of those guys, David against Goliath, there.

I'll take Trevor Elias on my team at any level at any time.

Mike Leone

His goal

Garrett made a great play, a little chip in the middle, and we've been talking about all week taking pucks wide and getting pucks on the net and I just wanted to shoot it on goal and get one of our guys coming in a rebound, but it took a good bounce and went in. I was actually just trying to get it on net and for a rebound for a guy coming in the slot, and it happened to go in. I was pretty excited.

We talked about it all week that it was going to be a battle, especially the second night, second game. They were going to give us anything they had. And we knew it was going to be a 60 minute battle and we had to stay in the fight. We talked about it, even if we got down, we had to keep it going. We knew at 10 minutes left, we had a lot of energy on the bench, and we just said keep plugging away, let's get one, and let's get another one. It was a huge weekend for us.

Power play

You know, we've been working really hard at it all week. We've been practicing our power play from Monday. Winning puck battles, it's huge. You see the nice plays, but the little plays in the corner make all the difference. We always talk about Coach Murray, we have to beat the other team's power play and special teams, work harder than them, and we did that this weekend, and that's huge for us.

We're playing good hockey right now. We played a really strong Ferris State team, they work hard, they came at us for two games, and we're just taking it game by game, shift by shift. We're just playing really hard, everyone's been talking about commitment, everyone just has to come in, and when we buy in we're a really good hockey team.

Chase Balisy

His goal

I saw that three on two there, and I was screaming pretty loud for that puck there, and Dane found me right on my tape, and it's a great play by Dane to make the pass, and Berschbach was driving there and took the defense with him.

On frustration

I think that when you play a team like that, and they play the way they do in the defensive zone, they're physical, obviously there's going to be frustration. But we stuck with it I think. All four lines, stuck to the game plan, and we got the job done.

On the time out

I think every was so wild after we got that second goal there, and then just to calm us down, make sure we knew what to do, stick with the game plan. That's what we did. Great way to finish the game out.

Ferris' physical play

It's definitely tough. I mean, that might be the most frustrating part there. But we knew that if we used our speed and we kept moving our feet, the referees were going to make calls out there. They took some runs at us, and they got put in the box for it.

Power play

Yeah, we rely on it, big time. We've been just getting goals at the right time, I think. Maybe not the best percentage, but at the right time when you get goals it's pretty important. It boosts the team up a bit. And it got the job done tonight.

Luke Witkowski

Five in a row. I wouldn't say lucky, we've brought our best work to every weekend. We may not have put three periods together in each game, but we prepare over the week and five's nice. Six sounds even better. Seven sounds even better than that.

We knew they'd probably stretch a guy behind us and basically as defensemen we were making sure that nobody got behind us. I didn't realize they hadn't had a shot in nine minutes, but that's pretty nice.

Ferris' physical play

They definitely came out to try and send a message. They definitely got all over us defensemen. Danny and I were just talking we hadn't been hit that hard in a long time. They brought their work ethic tonight.

On Elias

That's Trevor. He's a pitbull. He doesn't give up, he just keeps going, and he's got a smile on his face the whole time.
