KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan netted two goals in the final five minutes to come back and defeat No. 16 Ferris State, 2-1, in front of the largest crowd of the season, 4,116, at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Chase Balisy tied the game up and
Mike Leone netted the winner with 2:14 left in the game. The win extended Western Michigan's winning streak to five games, the longest regular season winning streak for WMU since February of 2007, when the Broncos rattled off five in a row from Feb. 3-23 with two wins over Alaska and Michigan State and then a win over Lake Superior State.
WMU goalie
Frank Slubowski made 25 saves on the night, allowing just one goal to earn his 10th win of the season. WMU (10-3-1, 7-2-1-1 CCHA) outshot the Bulldogs 35-26 on the night and finished 2-for-5 on the power play.
After a goal by Garrett Thompson gave the Bulldogs the lead the Broncos finally struck at 15:52 in the third period. During a power play
Dennis Brown chipped it into the FSU zone to
Dane Walters. The senior captain found Balisy streaking into the slot and the Nashville Predator's draft pick fired it high stick-side for his sixth goal of the season, squaring the game at 1-1.
Just 20 seconds after the goal Thompson was called for interference, putting the CCHA's top power play back on the ice.
Garrett Haar chipped the puck into the zone to Leone, who skated wide to the left circle. Leone fired from a sharp angle and snuck it past FSU goalie C.J. Motte for the game-winner and his second goal of the weekend.
Dan DeKeyser also tallied an assist on the game-winning goal.
Western Michigan heads to the University of Michigan for a pair of games before it is off to Joe Louis Arena and the Great Lakes Invitational to end 2012.
