Walters Powers WMU to 4-2 Win Over No. 16 Ferris State

KALAMAZOO -- In front of the fourth-straight sellout crowd of the year, the Western Michigan hockey team defeated No. 16 Ferris State, 4-2, in front of 4,018 fans at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.

Dane Walters tallied two power play goals, while Chase Balisy and Shane Berschbach each had two assists on the night. The seventh ranked Broncos (9-3-1, 6-2-1-1 CCHA) also picked up a goal and an assist from Kenney Morrison, while Frank Slubowski made 13 saves to extend WMU's winning streak to four games.

The Bronco defense held Ferris State to a season-low 15 shots on goal on the night, including only two in the third period. The Broncos fired off 32 on net and went two-for-four on the power play, while giving up just one on five Ferris State chances.

Mike Leone netted his first goal of the season to get the Broncos rolling at 14:36. Ben Warda made a drop pass to Leone in the left circle and the senior forward fired it into the top-right corner of the net to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

FSU responded on a goal by Garrett Thompson with 2:59 remaining in the period after the Broncos missed out on clearing a puck from the crease and Thompson poked it in.

Walters added his first of the night on a five-on-three power play at 11:56 in the second period. Morrison fired a blast from the left circle and the puck bounced off the glass and right to Walters for the goal. The goal was his fifth of the season with Morrison tallying his fifth assist and Dennis Brown notching his eighth helper.

The Bulldogs also added a power play goal after a defensive lapse created a two-on-one and Travis Ouellette capitalized to tie the game 2-2 at 13:59.

Walters added the game-winner and his second on the night with 1:57 left in the second period. Berschbach found Balisy at the bottom of the right circle and the Nashville Predator's draft pick made a pin-point pass to Walters through the slot and the St. Paul, Minn., native put it away for his sixth of the season.

Morrison added his fourth of the year just 57 seconds into the third period. The freshman defenseman took a pass from Berschbach at the far right point and fired a laser into the top-right corner of the net over C.J. Motte's glove.

The Broncos look to make it five straight wins when they host the Bulldogs for a rematch on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
