DETROIT -- Western Michigan fell to Michigan Tech, 4-0, in the championship game of the 2012 Great Lakes Invitational on Sunday night at Joe Louis Arena.
The Broncos outshot the Huskies 32-22 but were unable to find the back of the net as GLI most valuable player Pheonix Copley made 32 saves in the game and did not surrender a single goal on the weekend.
Mike Leone and
Dan DeKeyser were named to the All-Tournament team.
Dennis Rix gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead with 1:32 remaining in the first period. Mikael Lickteig picked up a loose puck and found Rix along the boards near the right circle. The junior forward spun and fired it over Slubowski's glove for his sixth of the season.
Michigan Tech had a power play goal waved off earlier in the period after the referee ruled that Slubowski was interfered with and not allowed to reset his position. The two teams were tied with six shots on goal each, while the Broncos went 0-for-2 on the power play in the period.
The Broncos outshot Michigan Tech 14-9 in the second period but were once again unable to find the back of the net. WMU also had to kill a five-minute major penalty in the period.
Blake Hietala gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead just 3:23 into the third period on his third goal of the season. Michigan Tech caught the Broncos out of position and Daniel Holmberg found Hietala open in the slot.
Michigan Tech added an empty-net goal and then a power play goal in the closing seconds.
The Broncos head to Bemidji, Minn., to battle the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
