KALAMAZOO -- The 10th ranked Western Michigan hockey team scored four unanswered goals to beat Northern Michigan, 4-2, in front of a sell-out crowd of 3,914 at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
Down 2-0 in the second period the Broncos (7-3-1, 4-2-1-1 CCHA) picked up two goals from
Chase Balisy, one from
Kenney Morrison and one from
Dane Walters in the win.
Shane Berschbach extended his scoring streak to five games, matching a career-high after two assists. Sophomore goalie
Frank Slubowski made 10 saves as the Bronco defense held NMU to just 12 shots on goal, outshooting them by 27 with 39 total.
After a scoreless first period Northern Michigan's Jake Johnson and Ryan Daugherty each tallied goals in the first four minutes of the second to give the Wildcats a quick 2-0 lead.
Just under three minutes later, on a NMU power play, Balisy pressured Wildcat goalie Jared Coreau and he lost the puck to the Nashville Predator's draft pick just to the right of the net. Balisy settled the puck and punched it in for his third goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was the second short-handed goal of the season, making him the first Bronco to tally two short-handers since the 2008-09 season when Sean Weaver and
Ian Slater each netted two.
Just over 10 minutes later Morrison tallied his third of the season on the Broncos' first power play of the night at 16:16. Morrison took a pass from
Dennis Brown and fired it, hitting the top-right elbow of the pipe and down into the net to tie the game 2-2. Berschbach also picked up an assist on the goal, his fourth of the season.
Walters scored the game-winner midway through the third period at 11:10 during a five-on-three Bronco power play. Morrison fired a slap shot from the left point and the rebound bounced to Walters and he tapped it in for his fourth of the season. Bershbach added his second helper of the night, setting up Morrison's shot on the goal.
NMU pulled Coreau, who made 35 saves in the losing effort, and Balisy intercepted a pass and found the empty net with 29 seconds to play to seal the win.
The Broncos finished the night without an even-strength goal, netting a short-hander, two power play tallies and an empty net goal.
