Cichy, Haar and Berschbach Lead WMU to Third Period Comeback

FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Western Michigan netted three goals in the third period to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat Alaska, 3-2, in front of 3,012 fans at the Carlson Center late Saturday night.

Alaska had a 2-0 lead heading into the third period before the Broncos responded with three unanswered goals. WMU had some momentum after outshooting the Nanooks 15-10 in the second period and it carried over to the third as Garrett Haar cut the lead to 2-1 3:34 into the period. Dane Walters found Haar trailing late and the sophomore defenseman buried it low for his third goal of the season.

Just 57 seconds later Mike Cichy fired off a shot that went high over the net. The puck bounced off the glass and back in front of the net to Shane Berschbach, who punched it in for his second of the season.

With the game now locked at 2-2 the Berschbach earned a late power play for the Broncos after he was held by a Nanook forward. Towards the end of the power play Haar skated behind the net and back-handed it to Cichy, who skated into the slot and roofed it for his second goal of the season and the game winner.

After a rough outing on Friday night, WMU goalie Frank Slubowski had a career-night in the win with 40 saves. Slubowski was also the team's best penalty killer on the night as he made nine saves during seven Alaska power plays.

Tyler Morley and Cody Kunyk netted goals for Alaska at 14:41 in the first period and 10:20 in the second period.

Cichy and Haar both finished the night with a goal and an assist each, while Josh Pitt, Dan DeKeyser and Jordan Oesterle each tallied assists.

The Broncos have Thanksgiving weekend off and then host Northern Michigan on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 7:05 p.m.
