BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Western Michigan defeated Bowling Green, 2-0, in a shootout after a 2-2 tie on Saturday night at BGSU Ice Arena.
The Broncos picked up goals from
Shane Berschbach and
Kenney Morrison, while Berschbach and
Dennis Brown tallied in the shootout to give the Broncos a five point weekend.
Frank Slubowski made 23 saves on the night and needed just one stop in the shootout after BG's first attempt hit the post.
Both Bronco goals came on the power play as the Broncos finished the game 2-for-6 with the man advantage. WMU was also able to kill off all three Falcon power plays.
WMU quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds into the game. Nearly identical to last night, Morrison fired a shot from the left point and beat BGSU goalie Tommy Burke over his shoulder for his second power-play goal of the series.
The Falcons were able to keep the Broncos on their toes for the rest of the first period as BG outshot WMU 11-5 in the first 20 minutes.
Bowling Green tied the game 1-1 with a quick goal of their own just 44 seconds into the second period. Connor Kurcera fired a shot from the left point and Ryan Carpenter was perfectly positioned in front of the net to tip it in for his second goal of the series.
At 13:33 the Falcons took the lead after a Bronco turnover resulted in a scramble for the puck. Andrew Wallace ended up banking it off a crowd of people in front of the net and in to put BGSU up 2-1.
Berschbach netted the game-tying goal 52 seconds into the third period on WMU's second power play goal of the night. Morrison fired a shot form the left point but it was right into
Dane Walters' chest. Walters then found Berschbach wide open on the right side of the crease and he buried it into an open net.
WMU heads across the country to Fairbanks, Alaska to battle the Nanooks next Friday and Saturday at 11:05 p.m.
