No. 10 WMU Shuts Down Bowling Green, 3-1

KALAMAZOO -- No. 10 Western Michigan dominated the Bowling Green Falcons, holding them to just 12 shots on goal in a 3-1 Bronco victory in front of a standing-room only crowd of 3,736 on Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena.

The Broncos (5-2-0, 2-1-0-0 CCHA) picked up goals from Dane Walters, Chase Balisy and Kenney Morrison while Frank Slubowski needed to make just 11 saves on the night. WMU smothered BGSU in the first period, holding them to just one shot on goal before allowing five in the second and six in the third period. Western Michigan was able to kill off all five of Bowling Green's power plays, while converting on one of their five.

Walters gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead with 5:58 remaining in the first period. Dennis Brown fired a shot from center point and Walters punched in the rebound for his third goal of the season. Balisy also tallied his fourth assist of the campaign on the night's first goal.

Just over a minute into the second period Balisy netted a short-hand goal to push the lead to 2-0. Jordan Oesterly broke up a play in the Bronco zone and passed it out to Walters, who moved it up to Balisy. The Nashville Predators' draft pick darted down the left side and into the left circle before beating BGSU goalie Andrew Hammond over his shoulder and into the net for his second of the season.

Just over two minutes later at 3:57 in the second period, Bryce Williamson brought the lead back to one after he tapped in a rebound off a shot by Ryan Carpenter for his first goal of the season.

Midway through third period Morrison netted his first collegiate goal on a power play. Morrison took a feed from Brown and fired it into the top-left corner of the net to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead and put away the game. It was Brown's second assist on the night and Shane Berschbach also tallied his first helper of the season.

BGSU's Hammond made a game-high 29 saves in the losing effort.

Western Michigan and Bowling Green battle again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Bowling Green.
