OXFORD, Ohio -- Western Michigan fell to No. 20 Miami, 4-0, on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena. It was the first time the Broncos have been swept since March 5, 2010 in a 4-0 loss to Alaska.
The Broncos out shot the RedHawks 22-19 but were unable to get any past Connor Knapp.
Reilly Smith struck for the fourth time on the weekend at 12:13 in the first period. Austin Czarnik won a faceoff to Smith and he fired the shot into the net just a second later to give Miami a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos had an excellent chance to tie it up early in the third period after
Chase Balisy and
Mike Leone had a two-on-one but Leone's shot was stuffed by Knapp and it resulted in a breakout on the other end. Jimmy Mullin was sprung by Ben Paulides and was in all alone for the breakaway goal to put Miami up 2-0.
Miami added another goal on another breakaway at 12:31 in the third period. This time it was Alden Hirschfeld who got in behind the Bronco defense and back-handed it into the net to give Miami a 3-0 lead.
Just 34 seconds later Tyler Biggs made it 4-0 RedHawks when he punched in a shot that went wide and off the boards by Trent Vogelhuber.
Western Michigan hosts Bowling Green on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and then travels to play the Falcons on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
