SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Anina Cicerone tallied twice as the
Western Michigan women's soccer team defeated Tulsa, 2-1, at the Notre Dame
adidas Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Cicerone's two goals, combined with six saves by Michelle
Watson and a much better defensive effort helped the Broncos (3-2-0) claim
their third win of the season. Cicerone and Stephanie Skowneski were both named
to the adidas Invitational All-Tournament team.
“It was just a much better effort than what we put forth on
Friday,” said head coach Suzie Grech. “We made better decisions on the ball and
played Western soccer.”
Cicerone gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead at the 37:15 mark of
the first period on a stunning shot from well outside the 18-yard box to the
lower left corner of the net. She added her second goal just 2:10 later at 39:25
after a free kick resulted in a loose ball in the box. It was the first
multi-goal game of her career and pushed her season total to three, just two
shy of her career-best of five that she registered last season.
“Anina's first goal was probably one of the best shots I've
seen in my coaching career,” said Grech.
The only hiccup for the Broncos came in the 60th minute when
Tulsa lobbed a free kick into the box and a WMU defender tried to clear it but
accidently headed it into the net for an own goal.
With its two regular season tournaments complete, Western
Michigan heads to coach Grech's alma mater to battle the Michigan Wolverines on
Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
