KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan fell to Toledo, 3-2, in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex.
Three different Rockets scored on the day as the Broncos (5-5-0, 1-1-0 MAC) had an eight game home unbeaten streak snapped.
Toledo (4-5-1, 2-0-0 MAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a goal by Nicole Gyurgyik. Toledo's Kristen Lynn found Gyurgyik in the left side of the box and the sophomore forward fired it into the far post side for her fifth goal of the season.
The Rockets added to their lead in the 30th minute after a miscue on the Bronco back line led to an easy goal for Toledo's Rio James. A misplayed pass found the foot of James, who slotted it into the right side of the net.
The Broncos pulled one back just five minutes into the second half on a header by
Alison Szczypka. Szczpyka, who was brought in during the end of the first half to sure up the back line, was near the edge of the box when she redirected a
Caitlin Henderson corner kick for her first goal of the season.
Toledo added a late goal in the 74th minute after Rachel MacLeod won a 50-50 ball in the midfield and took it all the way into the box. WMU goalkeeper
Michelle Watson came out to play it but MacLeod flicked it over her and into the net to give the Rockets a late 3-1 lead.
WMU added a late goal again on a corner kick. This time it was
Megan Putnam who rose above the Toledo defense to head in her first collegiate goal. Toledo successfully maintained possession in the final minutes to hold on to the win.
The Broncos are once again home for MAC play next weekend when they host Ohio on Friday at 4 p.m. and Akron on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
