DEKALB, Ill. – Brittney Pavlica,
Aubrey Sudomier and
Stephanie Skowneski each netted their first goals of the season as the Western Michigan (1-1-0) women's soccer team defeated North Dakota 3-0 on day one of the Northern Illinois Tournament on Friday afternoon to earn its first victory of the season.
Pavlica took a pass from
Jackie Drees, after the senior outside back made a run down the right flank, and slotted it home for the sixth goal of her career and the first Bronco goal of the 2011 season in the 20th minute of the first half.
“The early goal gave us some comfort and that carried us through the first half,” said head coach
Suzie Grech. “It gave them a little bit of fuel to start the second half as well but the second goal really swung things in our favor.”
Sudomier netted her first collegiate goal in her second career game in the 65th minute after playing some nifty give-and-go with the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, Skowneski. The freshman forward passed it to Skowneski out wide, who returned the ball to her and she slotted it home.
In the 75th minute Skowneski knocked in a goal of her own, cleaning up a corner kick. Alyson Szczypka headed
Caitlin Henderson's corner on goal but it bounced off of the cross bar and back into play, where Skowneski poked it in for her first of the season.
In total the Broncos outshot the Fighting Sioux by a staggering 30-7 margin, landing 12 on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Michelle Watson needed to make just one save on the afternoon to earn her first career clean sheet.
“We need to work on our finishing,” added Grech. “We left plenty on the table and I think Sunday is going to be a very tough game so hopefully we can finish better when we get those kind of chances.”
