DES MOINES, Iowa/HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up competition at the Drake Relays and the GINA Relays on Saturday evening with the Broncos posting two top-eight finishes in Des Moines.
Sophomore
Iris Campbell continued her stellar season winning her heat in the 400m hurdles at the Drake Relays with a new personal-best time of 59.19 seconds. It is the third time this season that she has posted a new personal-bet in the event. Her time was good enough for fifth place overall.
"She took another big chunk off her personal best time," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "It is still kind of a new event for her and we are working with her to improve the second half of her race. There is still a lot more improvement there and I think she is capable of dropping another second or two but whenever you cross the finish line first at the Drake Relays in front of 20,000 people it is a big thrill."
Campbell also helped lead the 1,600m sprint medley team to an eighth place finish and second in their heat. Campbell and
Stephanie Okolo ran the 200m dash legs and
Leya Munwam gave the Broncos a brief lead on the 400m dash leg. After the baton exchange the Broncos dropped back to fourth but
Rachel Whitley moved them back up to second.
Over at the GINA Relays at Hillsdale College freshman
Destinee Lukianoff and
Autumn Grayson both improved season marks in the 1,500m run. Lukianoff finished with a time of 4:59.49 and Grayson at 5:01.08. Junior
Amber Brunmeier also turned in a good time in the 3,000m run with a mark of 10:16.69.
