KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team engaged the Ball State Cardinals in a thriller that literally came down to the last match, but the Broncos fell just short in dropping a heartbreaking 4-3 decision at Sorensen Courts in the semifinals of the 2011 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Men's Tennis championship. The Broncos and Cardinals were tied 3-3 entering the third set of the final match, with Ball State finding the resolve to pull off the win.
Ball State earned the critical doubles point by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, but the Broncos thought they had gained the upper hand by taking the first three singles matches off the court. Kazuya Komada worked quickly in the No. 2 singles match, racing to a 6-1, 6-0 finish to open the scoring; Pablo Olivarez finished soon after by taking the No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-4. The scoring for the Broncos was wrapped up by Michael Calderone, who took a thriller in the No. 1 singles match 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2); Calderone also teamed with Komada to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-4. However, the Cardinals won the final three singles matches to earn the win.
