OXFORD, Ohio -- The nation's longest unbeaten streak ended on Saturday night as Western Michigan fell to Miami, 3-1, at Steve Cady Arena.
Miami took a 1-0 lead at the 14:11 mark of the first period on a power play goal by Matt Tomassoni. Tomassoni fired a shot from the center of the blue line and the puck got passed a screened
Jerry Kuhn and into the net.
The RedHawks locked down the Broncos in the second period, allowing just three shots on goal despite giving WMU three power play opportunities. Miami pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 8:13 mark with Rielly Smith found Andy Miele alone in the slot. The nation's leading scorer was all alone and beat Kuhn high for his 17th goal of the year.
Miami added a goal just over three minutes later at 11:56 when Curtis McKenzie deflected in a shot and it trickled past Kuhn for his fifth of the season.
The Broncos picked up a goal at 14:06 in the third period on a short-handed goal by
Ryan Watson. Watson got a pass from
Ian Slater and waited at the top of the right circle. Watson faked a stretch pass
Kuhn made 32 saves in the loss.
The Broncos (15-7-10, 9-6-9-5 CCHA) are on the road once again next weekend as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to battle the Wolverines. Both games are at 7:35 p.m. with Friday's game broadcast by Comcast and Saturday's by Fox Sports Detroit.
