Andy Murray Inducted Into IIHF Hall of Fame

ZURICH, Switzerland -- Western Michigan head hockey coach Andy Murray has been inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2012.

Murray, who is inducted in the "builder's" category, joins players Pavel Bure, Phil Housley, Raimo Helminen, and Milan Novy in the class.

"I'm very flattered and humbled by the recognition," said Murray. "To me it is more a recognition of the quality players and people that I have had a chance to be associated with. It is a very special honor."

Murray, a native of Souris, Manitoba, coached Team Canada to three IIHF World Championships. He won gold medals in 1997, 2003, and 2007 with three completely different rosters. Murray is the only non-Russian head coach in the history of the IIHF World Championships to ever win three gold medals for his country.

Murray also coached Team Canada to a record six Spengler Cups, an annual hockey tournament held in Davos, Switzerland.

In the 1980's and early 90's, Murray was a head coach four  times in Europe. He coached three different teams in the Swiss A Division, including a four-year stint with EHC Kloten.

He is the ninth Canadian coach to be inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame and the 23rd Canadian overall.
