ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- No. 8 Western Michigan fell on the road to St. Cloud State 4-2 in front of 4,079 fans at The National Hockey Center on Thursday night, ending WMU's four game unbeaten streak.
Western Michigan picked up goals from
Shane Berschbach and
J.J. Crew but St. Cloud's Jared Festler netted two in the third period, including the game-winner. WMU netminder
Frank Slubowski made 19 saves in the loss as the Broncos gave up two power play goals on the night.
Western Michigan took an early lead on Crew's third goal of the season just 3:27 into the first period. The senior centerman broke up the play in the WMU end and passed it out to
Brett Beebe and Beebe fired a pass into the slot where Crew redirected it into the net. The assist was Beebe's fifth of the season.
St. Cloud tied it up with 1:21 remaining in the period on a power play goal. A Bronco defender fell down in the slot and it allowed SCSU's Nic Dowd the time to put a move on Slubowski and back-hand it into the net.
Berschbach's sixth of the year game WMU a 2-1 lead just 1:51 into the second period. Berschbach picked up a loose puck at the blue line and skated through the left circle before sniping it above SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher's shoulder and into the net.
The Huskies tied it up again at 2-2 midway through the third period. Festler fired a shot from the left circle. Slubowski made the initial save but the puck deflected over his shoulder and into the net.
Festler added the game-winning goal with 3:05 left in the third period on St. Cloud's second power play goal of the night. He was left alone in the right circle and buried it into the back of the net to give the Huskies their only lead of the game.
The Huskies added an empty-net goal with 0.9 seconds left in the game to seal the win.
