ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell to Michigan 5-2 on Saturday night at Yost Ice Arena, losing for the first time this season.
The Broncos had a 2-1 lead in the second period after goals by
Chase Balisy and
Derek Roehl but could not hold the lead as the Wolverines scored four unanswered goals.
Michigan took a 1-0 lead at 10:57 in the first period when a shot by Derek Deblois went off the post and off of Slubowski's back and into the net for his second goal of the season.
The Broncos tied it early in the second period on Balisy's fourth goal of the season. The Nashville Predators draft pick had a shot in the crease saved by Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick but he back-handed the rebound into the top-left corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
Dane Walters and
Shane Berschbach each tallied assists on the goal.
WMU took a 2-1 lead at the 10:18 mark of the second period when a shot by
Luke Witkowski hit the post and bounced right to Roehl, who buried it into an open net for his second of the season. Witkowski tallied his third assist of the season and
Dan DeKeyser notched his fourth.
The Wolverines tied it up at 15:42 on a power play goal by Guptill. He took a pass from in front of the neat and dangled it around Slubowski and into the net to make it 2-2.
Michigan netted their third goal of the night and second on the power play just 3:33 into the third period. Mac Bennett fired a shot from the left point and it beat Slubowski high on the stick side.
Michigan added another goal with 4:48 left in the third period after a Bronco turnover at center ice. Kevin Lynch took the puck down to the goal line and found A.J. Treais trailing and he buried it for his sixth goal of the season. An empty-netter was scored with 59 seconds left to push the score to 5-2.
