TOLEDO, Ohio -- In the 105th minute in double overtime Western Michigan's
Anina Cicerone headed in the game-winning goal to send the women's soccer team to their second-straight Mid-American Conference Final as the Broncos defeated rivals Central Michigan, 1-0, at Scott Park on Friday afternoon.
After a Chippewa foul senior defender
Caitlin Henderson served a free kick into the box and Cicerone rose up to flick it on net with her head. The ball skirted past CMU goalie Stefanie Turner and into the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. It is the second-straight season in which Cicerone has scored the game-winning goal in the MAC Semifinals to send the Broncos to the Championship game. Henderson tallied her seventh assist on the game-winning goal.
"Today was a really hard fought game," said head coach
Suzie Grech. "I thought we played extremely well and carried play in the first half and we were able to hold off a high-pressure and high-intensity team in Central Michigan and get it done."
The game was fairly even with WMU holding the overall shot lead 14-13 and the shot on goal advantage at 7-4 but neither team was able to capitalize in regulation or in the first overtime period. The Broncos did pick up two good chances in the first half with
Brittney Pavlica sending a shot just wide and
Stephanie Skowneski's chip being just deflected enough by the Turner.
Michelle Watson made four saves, including one from point-blank range, on the day to earn her 12th shutout of the season and the team's seventh-straight. This is the second time the Broncos shutout the Chippewas this season, beating them in Kalamazoo 1-0 on Oct. 14.
"We played well as a team defensively," added Grech. "The point-blank save by Michelle was one of the best I've seen in my coaching career. Caitlin also made a fantastic save off the line on a corner kick for us."
Western Michigan plays top-seeded Toledo on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Toledo's Scott Park.
