KALAMAZOO --
Chase Balisy and
Dennis Brown netted goals to give the 12th ranked Western Michigan Hockey team a shootout win over No. 2 Notre Dame on Tuesday night in front of 3,381 fans at Lawson Ice Arena.
Brown and
J.J. Crew netted goals in regulation for the 2-2 tie and
Frank Slubowski made 28 saves and stopped one attempt in the shootout. Balisy and Brown's goals gave the Broncos a 2-0 shootout win after Slubowski stopped T.J. Tynan and Mike Voran never got a shot off as he lost the puck.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead at 5:24 in the first period on Austin Wuthrich's fifth goal of the season. Voran's centering pass deflected off of two Broncos and right on to Wuthrich's stick and the freshman spun and fired it over Slubowski's stick-side shoulder.
The Broncos responded early in the second period at 3:24 on Brown's second of the season.
Ian Slater and
Trevor Elias dislogged the puck from the scrum and it bounced to Brown. The sophomore defenseman walked the puck into the high slot and beat Notre Dame goalie Mike Johnson on the glove side. The goal gave Brown a new career high as he only lit the lamp once during his freshman season.
Crew's first goal of the season gave the Broncos a 2-1 lead at 13:51 in the second period.
Derek Roehl dug the puck out of the corner and
Brett Beebe used a drop pass to find Crew. The Placentia, Calif., native skated in on Johnson and back-handed it between his legs for the goal.
The lead would not hold as Notre Dame tied it with 6:11 left in the third period. Sam Calabrese's shot was deflected in front of the net and Bryan Rust punched the loose puck in for his third of the season.
WMU held Notre Dame scoreless on three power plays, while the Broncos finished 0-for-1. Notre Dame outshot the Broncos 30-26 on the night, the first time WMU has been outshot in five games.
Western Michigan has the weekend off but has a home-and-home series with Ferris State next Friday and Saturday. The Broncos will be at FSU on Dec. 2 and host the Bulldogs on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
