Broncos Drop Road Contest at Notre Dame 3-2

SOUTH BEND, Ind., -- The Western Michigan hockey team comeback fell short as the Broncos lost 3-2 to Notre Dame in front of 4,216 fans at Compton Family Ice Arena on Tuesday night.

WMU picked up goals from Ian Slater and Shane Berschbach but the Fighting Irish scored all three of there goals in a five minute span in the second period to keep the Broncos at bay. Notre's Riley Sheahan netted two goals on the night and was named Perani Cup First Star.

The Broncos took a 1-0 lead midway through the second period on a wrist-shot from the slot by Slater. The senior-captain pulled up just at the tip of the circles and the shot beat ND goalie Mike Johnson on the glove side for his second of the season. Dane Walters picked up his sixth assist of the season on the play.

The lead didn't last long as Notre Dame scored two goals in under a minute starting with their first one just 29 seconds after Slater's at 9:59.  A turnover in the neutral zone created an odd-man rush for the Fighting Irish and defenseman Shayne Taker put the puck in the net for his first of the season. A penalty was called on the goal so Notre Dame immediately started on a power play and converted just 40 seconds later on a slap-shot from the top of the left circle by Sheahan for his first of two goals on the night.

Sheahan's second of the game came at the 15:08 mark of the second period after Jeff Costello's shot got between WMU goalie Frank Slubowski's legs and was headed wide of the goal but the Detroit Red Wings draft pick was there to punch it in.

The Broncos were only able to cut the lead to 3-2 on Berschbach's fifth of the season with 6:37 remaining in the game. Berchbach was parked just left of the net and put in a rebound on a shot by Kyle O'Kane.

WMU pulled Slubowski in the final minute to get an extra attacker but were unable to convert.

Western Michigan has the weekend off but hosts the Fighting Irish on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Lawson Ice Arena. The game will be broadcast by Comcast and simulcast on Bronco Insider at 7 p.m.
