Broncos Blank Chargers, 4-0

KALAMAZOO -- The 13th ranked Western Michigan hockey team completed the sweep of Alabama-Huntsville with a 4-0 win on Saturday night in front of 2,689 fans at Lawson Ice Arena.

Freshman Frank Slubowski made his collegiate debut with 10 saves and earning his first career shutout in goal for the Broncos. WMU picked up goals from Chase Balisy, Shane Berschbach, Kyle O'Kane and Trevor Elias in the win.

Balisy netted his first goal of the season at 7:44 in the first period to give WMU an early 1-0 lead. The Nashville Predators draft pick won the faceoff back to Dan DeKeyser and the sophomore defenseman fired a wrist shot from beyond the left circle that deflected off of Balisy's leg and into the net.

The Broncos (2-0-0) added a goal with nine second remaining in the first period to push the lead to 2-0. Balisy split the Charger defense with an excellent pass and found Berschbach in front of the net for the easy goal. The goal was Berschbach's third of the season and Balisy added his fourth assist. Dane Walters also picked up his first of two assists on the night on the goal. The three linemates combined for five goals and eight assists on the weekend.

O'Kane knocked in a rebound off a shot from Derek Roehl at 11:37 in the second period for the third Brown & Gold goal of the night. The goal was the first of the season for O'Kane with Roehl and Matt Tennyson also tallying their first assists.

Elias added his first of the season just under three minutes later when he went top-shelf over the shoulder of UAH goalie Clarke Saunders. Walters tallied this third assist of the season on the goal and freshman defenseman Garrett Haar tallied his first collegiate point with an assist.

The Bronco defense once again smothered the Chargers holding them to just 10 shots on goal in the game and shutting them out on the power play for the second night on three chances.

Western Michigan heads to No. 11 Union next weekend for a tough battle of two highly ranked teams. Both faceoffs are at 7 p.m.
