Head Coach Andy Murray
(opening statement)
I mean, it was exciting for me the first game at home here to see
the enthusiasm of the student section. I thought our team worked extremely
hard, we got pucks to the net. I liked also the fact that in the third period
we didn't allow a shot. You know, this is a hard working team from
Alabama-Huntsville, we've got a great deal of respect for them. That's why we
worked as hard as we did. We saw them play on tape, two games last weekend, two
one-goal games against Lake Superior State and we knew that we'd have to be at
our best to beat them. So we'll enjoy the win here tonight, we'll figure out
some things that we could do better, regroup tomorrow morning, and go back at
'em tomorrow night.
(On first regular season
win)
You know, the interesting thing that I found about college is
that every game is a back-to-back so you don't have much time to enjoy it. So
I've kind of parked this one already, and I'm looking forward to the game
tomorrow night, how we can be better. We know that Alabama-Huntsville is a
hardworking team. Again, they battled Lake Superior last weekend, so we know
that they're not going to be happy with the game tonight, and they're play
really hard. I really respect how their team works and that's why we're trying
to work as hard as we can.
(Scrappy team like that,
how pleased were you to see your guys come out in the third after taking it off
the gas a little in the second, how happy were you about the third?)
Those games are difficult to play. You've got an opponent that
plays extremely hard. I thought our team in the third period was really solid
through the neutral zone, tried to eliminate scoring chances for them, so we
were solid defensively.
(Face offs, you told me
that's a big part of what you like to see, you won 38 out of 63 tonight, what
are your thoughts there?)
I'd like to win 48 of 63. I think we can be even better on our
face offs. They've got a few good face off players on their team and we have to
find a way to beat them. But if you don't win your face offs, you don't start
with the puck, you're playing defense right away - so we'd like to have the
puck.
(Overall thoughts heading
into tomorrow, anything that sticks out that you want to see better tomorrow?)
Yeah, I mean, I thought we turned the puck over at the blue line
a few times, and I think we have certain individual players that need to raise
the level of their game to what we want. I'm looking forward to see if they're
capable of doing that.
Matt Tennyson
(On two goals he scored.)
First one, I just kind of walked around, down low and forward,
walked around the net and no one was on me, so I just threw it at the net and
got a good bounce on that one, on the first one. Second one, Bersch hit me with
a pass.
(Little bit of distance on
that one, too. Was that a little bit of a surprise that it found its way
through?)
No, I think we worked on that, you know, jumped up in the play.
Not really a surprise, just more execution.
(On aggressive start)
Oh, it's huge. Especially the first game of the year. Everybody
was going, everybody was excited to play in front of the fans, especially with
the year we had last year. It was a good start, and I think it really helped us
for the rest of the game.
Shane Berschbach
(On fast start.)
There are two minutes that coaches look at for important minutes
of hockey, and that's the first minute of the period, and the last minute of
the period. Unfortunately we gave one up in the last minute, there, but we got
two in the first minute of each period in the first and third, so it was a good
start.
(Is that your quickest goal
ever for you, into a period?)
Yeah, I think that might be my record right there, for sure.
(On keeping Huntsville from
getting any momentum.)
Yeah, they're a good team, they work hard, they come at you every
shift, so you can't take 'em lightly, just take their maybe over-aggressiveness
and just make good plays around them. We're going to be ready for them
tomorrow.
(On holding Alabama to zero
shots in the third period)
Our coach talks to us about respecting the other team and he
thinks we don't respect them if we don't play them the full 60 minutes. He gave
us a challenge there, at the end, to keep our shots at 12 the whole time, so we
didn't give 'em a shot there in the third.
(Did Coach Murray crack a
smile at all? I haven't seen one yet.)
He's a serious guy on the bench, but yeah, he definitely had a
smile on after the big win. It was his first real collegiate win and so it was
a good night for us all.
