KENT, Ohio -- Western Michigan's
Stephanie Skowneski tied the school record for goals in a career with her 23rd goal as a Bronco as WMU blanked Kent State 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
Skowneski's goal, the game-winner, came in the 38th minute off a one-timer from
Nikolette Rivera. Rivera found Skowneski in the center of the box and the senior put home her sixth of the season to give WMU (7-6-0, 3-2-0 MAC) a 1-0 lead. The goal tied Katie Markey's (1996-99) record of 23. Skowneski also tied Markey and Jessica Pattison's record for goals in a season last year when she netted nine on her way to being named MAC Offensive Player of the Year
Freshman
Diana Dedvukaj later netted her second of the season in the 60th minute to push the lead to 2-0 and seal WMU's second straight win. Dedvukaj was able to knock in a rebound off a cross from
Rachel Chaney.
Western Michigan goalkeeper
Michelle Watson made seven saves to keep the clean sheet as the Broncos were outshot 22-10 on the day.
“It was a great and gutsy win against a very physical team on the road,” said head coach
Suzie Grech. “I was impressed with our determination and persistence throughout the game. The girls fought together and came out with two great goals and a much needed road win.”
