DEKALB, Ill. -- Senior forward
Stephanie Skowneski broke the school record for goals in a career as she netted two goals as the Western Michigan women's soccer team defeated Northern Illinois, 2-0, on the road to end the 2011 regular season.
The record-setting goal came at 24:16 in the first half she headed in a volley from
Nikolette Rivera to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. The goal was Skowneski's seventh on the season and Rivera tallied her fourth assist.
Skowneski gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead at with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman forward
Aubrey Sudomier had a breakaway and the Northern Illinois goalkeeper played her and she dumped the ball to Skowneski, who calmly finished for her eighth goal of her season and 25th of her career.
Michelle Watson made three saves to earn her 10th shutout of the season and the fifth straight for the Broncos.
The win was the 12th of the season for the Broncos, the second most in program history and the second straight season with double-digit wins.
After finishing third in the MAC, Western Michigan hosts the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the sixth seeded Ball State Cardinals.
