OXFORD, Ohio -- Anina Cicerone and Nikolette Rivera each netted goals and Michelle Watson made nine saves to earn her WMU record ninth shutout this season as Western Michigan defeated Miami, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon on the road.

The game-winner came early in the first period in the eighth minute on Rivera's second goal of the season. The senior midfielder blasted a rebound on a shot by Cicerone into the upper left corner of the net.

The Broncos pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute on Cicerone's team-leading eighth goal of the season. Cicerone took a pass from Stephanie Skowneski and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the far left corner of the net to seal the game for the Broncos. The assist was Skowneski's eighth on the season.

"Today was a solid game for us," said head coach Suzie Grech. "We withstood a lot of initial pressure from a very talented Miami team and capitalized on two unbelievable shots by Anina and Riv (Rivera)."

The Broncos were outshot 23-11 including 15-3 in the second half but the back line and Watson held firm for the ninth shutout of the season for the team. Watson's shutout breaks the previous school record of eight by Katie Perz in 2003.

"Michelle had the game of her career so far today," said Grech. "She made some crucial saves in the beginning of the game as well as in the final minutes when Miami was pressing."

The Broncos close down the regular season on Thursday at Northern Illinois but have now clinched a home game for the MAC Tournament on Sunday. The time and opponent are still to be determined.
