FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Western Michigan used a three-goal second period to propel them to their first CCHA win of the season as they downed Alaska on the road, 4-1, at the Carlson Center late Friday night.
After trailing in the first period the Broncos picked up goals from
Ben Warda,
Derek Roehl and
Will Kessel in the second period and a late goal by Dave Killip in the third period. WMU goalie
Nick Pisellini picked up his second win of the season, making 26 saves on the night. This is the largest margin of victory for the Broncos in a win at Alaska since a 6-2 win on Jan. 25, 2003 and the first conference win for first year head coach
Andy Murray.
Granberg gave the Nanooks the 1-0 lead at 12:33 in the first period on his first goal of the season. He came out of the penalty box to give Alaska a power play and skated right to the slot. Nik Yaremchuck centered the puck from behind the net and Granberg blasted it over Pisellini's shoulder and into the net. Carlo Finnucci also picked up an assist on the goal.
Warda scored the first of the three goals for WMU in the second period. He won a faceoff in the Alaska end back to Roehl, who cycled it to
Jordan Oesterle and the freshman defenseman fired a shot from the center point. UAF goalie Scott Greenham made the initial save but Warda was there to put in the rebound to square the game at 1-1.
Roehl gave the Broncos the lead at 7:13 in the period on a snipe to the stick-side corner of the net for his first of the year. Dan DeKeyer brought the puck down and passed it to
Ian Slater in the neutral zone. Slater made a cross ice pass once he was in the UAF zone to Roehl and the senior winger buried it.
Kessel tallied his first collegiate goal just over three minutes later at 10:40 when the rebound off his shot was knocked in by a UAF defenseman. Kessel tried to jam in a goal but Greenham got a piece of it. The puck bounced over his leg and was heading into the net but a UAF player tried to clear it, accidentally knocking it back off Greenham and into the net. Dave Killip and
Robert Francis each picked up assists on the goal as WMU extended its lead to 3-1.
The Broncos added their fourth goal at 8:58 in the third period after Alaska's Trevor Campbell was kicked out of the game for checking from behind. The five minute major resulted in Killip's second goal of the season as he deflected in a shot by
Luke Witkowski and into the net. Kessel also picked up an assist of the night for his first career two-point game.
The Bronco penalty kill was able to kill off seven of Alaska's eight power plays on the night, while the Broncos converted on one of four.
Western Michigan and Alaska do battle once again on Saturday night at 11:05 p.m. EST.
