BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Freshman
Rachel Chaney netted her second goal of the season and
Michelle Watson made four saves to earn her record-tying eighth shutout of the season as the Western Michigan women's soccer team downed Bowling Green, 2-0, on the road on Friday night.
The Broncos (10-7, 6-3 MAC) ruined the Falcons' first ever night home game at when Chaney struck from 20 yards out in the 48th minute to give WMU a 1-0 lead. The ball deflected to her after a free kick and the Shelby Township, Mich., native was able to hammer it home from distance.
Western Michigan's lead was extended just three minutes later when
Brittney Pavlica crossed it into the box and the ball was deflected into the net by a BG defender for the own goal.
"Today was a great win on the road," said head coach
Suzie Grech, who has led the Broncos to back-to-back double-digit win seasons for the first time since the 2003 and 2004 seasons. "We have been putting together full games and having a number of people stepping up going forward. I thought Rachel really made her mark on the field today. She got herself a goal and created multiple chances for us going forward."
With two goals in hand the Broncos shut down the Falcons allowing just four shots on goal, which Watson saved. The sophomore keeper from Cincinnati, Ohio tied Katie Perz (2003) all-time record for shutouts in a season with her eighth. It is also the 22nd shutout by the Broncos under Grech.
"Defensively we were solid," added Grech. "We didn't allow BG to get behind us and play their game. Our back line played very well as a unit tonight."
Western Michigan continues on the road at Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m.
