KALAMAZOO -- A goal in the 27th minute by
Brittney Pavlica is all it took for Western Michigan to end Akron's five-game shutout streak as the Bronco women's soccer team defeated the Zips 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex.
Caitlin Henderson sent in a corner kick that bounced around and off of Pavlica's stomach and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season to give WMU a 1-0 lead. The Bronco defense only allowed five shots and one shot on goal on the day, while WMU landed three of its seven shots on net.
“It was a hard fought win,” said head coach
Suzie Grech on the game that featured 21 total fouls. “Sometimes those 1-0 wins aren't very pretty and when you have that 1-0 lead you know that they are going to throw everything at you and Akron is a very good offensive team. I thought we did a good job of keeping our heads and staying organized. We did a good job of relieving the pressure.”
Michelle Watson only needed to make one save in the game to earn the fourth shutout of the season for WMU.
Western Michigan (6-6-0, 2-2-0 MAC) makes the Kent State/Buffalo swing next week, battling the Golden Flashes on Friday at 4 p.m. and the Bulls on Sunday at 11 a.m.
