Broncos and Dutchmen Battle To Another Tie, 3-3

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- For the second straight night neither team could hold a lead and Western Michigan once again came from behind to force a draw with 11th ranked Union, finishing 3-3 on Saturday night at Messa Rink.

The 12th ranked Broncos (2-0-2) picked up goals from Dan DeKeyser, Shane Berschbach and the game-tying tally from Chase Balisy. Nick Pisellini made 27 saves to earn the draw for WMU. Union's Jeremy Welsh scored all three goals for the Dutchmen, while Troy Grosenick made 23 saves.

WMU took an early 1-0 lead on DeKeyser's goal in at 6:39 in the first period. He took a pass from Squires and fired it low from the slot and it got past Troy Grosenick for his second goal of the year. Squires and Dave Killip earned assists on WMU's third power play goal of the season.

Welsh responded with his first on the night at 9:15 in the period on a power play goal of his own. Union had a five-on-three advantage and just as it ended Kelly Zajac found Welsh alone in the right circle and he one-timed it into the net.

Bersbach's fourth of the year came with 1:51 remaining in the first period to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead. The Clawson, Mich., native put in the rebound on a shot by Chase Balisy to give WMU the lead. Balisy earned his fifth assist on the season and WMU goalie Nick Pisellini also tallied an assist.

Welsh netted two goals in the second period to give Union a lead and complete the hat-trick. The first came just 52 seconds into the period when he tapped in a rebound on his own shot. The second came on a power play at 8:52 from the slot. There was a battle for the puck in the corner and Max Novak came away with it and found the big 6-foot-3 center alone in the slot for his third of the night.

Balisy tied the game at 8:04 on the power play in the third period when a shot by Dennis Brown went wide and bounced off the boards, around the net and right to Balisy's stick. The sophomore centerman pushed the puck into an open net for his second goal of the season.

Both teams capitalized twice on the power play with the Broncos going 2-for-5 and Union scoring on 2-of-6.

Western Michigan opens up CCHA play next weekend on the road at Alaska with both games at 11:05 p.m. EST.
