SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. -- For the second straight night the Western Michigan hockey team gave up a goal in the final minute and the Lake Superior State Lakers tied the Broncos 4-4 before beating WMU in a shootout in front of 2,173 fans at Taffy Abel arena on Saturday night.
The Broncos (12-6-8, 6-5-7-4C CCHA) got goals from
Matt Tennyson,
Shane Berschbach,
Chase Balisy and
Kyle O'Kane but once again gave the lead away in the final minute. Kyle Jean scored the lone shootout goal that took six rounds to complete as the Lakers took the extra point. Despite the shootout loss, the Broncos still hold the nation's longest unbeaten streak at nine games.
The Lakers took an early lead at 15:04 in the first period with a power play goal by Will Acton. Acton poked one past Kuhn from the right circle for his first of two goals on the night to give LSSU a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos responded with two quick goals in the second period. Tennyson tallied at the 1:29 mark on a shot from the left circle, beating LSSU goalie Kevin Kapalka low on his stick side for his sixth goal of the season.
Derek Roehl tallied his sixth assist on the season.
WMU's second of the period came at the 3:30 mark on some nifty passing by
Ian Slater and Balisy. Slater passed it to Balisy in the slot and the freshman center dropped a no-look pass back to Berschbach and Berschbach fired glove side for his sixth goal of the season.
The three hooked up again at 7:51 in the second period to give WMU a 3-1 lead. Berschbach passed it to Slater in front of the net and he slid it to Balisy, who poked it in from just in front of the crease for his ninth goal of the season.
The lead didn't hold as the Lakers answered as a power play ended. Acton picked up a loose puck just to the right of the net and Kuhn was on the ground after attempting to make a save. Acton fired it over Kuhn for his second on the night.
The Lakers tied the game 3-3 with 1:55 remaining in the second period on a power play goal Kellan Lain after
Ryan Watson was handed a five-minute major penalty for checking from behind. Lain grabbed a LSSU pass out of the air and put it on the ground. The 6-foot-6 forward poked it between Kuhn's legs for just his second goal of the season.
O'Kane gave WMU a 4-3 lead with 1:52 remaining in the game but the lead didn't hold as Rick Schofield rescued the Lakers again on his second extra-attacker goal of the weekend, this one at 19:32 in the third period. The goal was on a six-on-four advantage after
Luke Witkowski took a penalty and the Lakers pulled their goalie.
Once again neither team took advantage of the extra five minutes as the game was decided in the shootout.
