SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. --
Max Campbell netted his 13th goal of the season and netted the game-winning goal in the shootout as WMU prevailed with a 3-2 shootout win over Lake Superior State in front of 1,975 fans at Taffy Abel Arena on Friday night.
Mike Leone netted his first goal of the season and
Jerry Kuhn made 18 saves and one big stop in the shootout to keep the nation's longest unbeaten streak alive and extended to eight games.
Dennis Brown improved to 5-for-5 in shootout attempts and
Greg Squires also tallied in the shootout as the Broncos were perfect on every attempt.
Despite a big shot advantage for WMU, it was Lake Superior State that got on the board first with a goal 31 seconds into the second period. After a faceoff win by Rick Schofield Zach Trotman fired a blast from the right point and it got by a well-screened Kuhn and into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Schofield tallied his 10th assist on the season and Will Acton also tallied a helper.
The Broncos struck back at 15:09 in the second when Leone redirected a shot by
Ian Slater for his first Division I goal. The transfer from Adrian College had netted 14 during a season at the Division III level. Slater and
Danny DeKeyser each tallied assists on the game-tying goal.
Campbell's goal came at 11:21 in the third period after he poked a rebound on a shot by
Greg Squires through Kapalka's legs for his 13th of the season. Squires tallied his 13th assist and
Ross Henry picked up his third of the season.
The goal did not hold as Rick Schofield netted his ninth goal of the season from the slot with 31 seconds remaining in the third period to force overtime.
The Broncos and Lakers battle for the final time of the regular season on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
