KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan (1-0) men's tennis opened 2011 with a 7-0 victory over Detroit Thursday at West Hills, sweeping all six singles matches and winning two of three doubles.
Brothers Michael and Thomas Calderone paired up to win No. 1 doubles, 8-1, and Pablo Olivarez and Casey Cullen took the match at No. 2, 8-3. Detroit's lone win of the day came at No. 3 doubles, with the Titans' Alex Latosinsky and Pablo Nunez taking down WMU's Kazuya Komada and Simon Blomberg, 8-5.
In singles play, Brad Noel made short work of David Stabley in the No. 6 match, going 6-0, 6-0, to turn in Western Michigan's first individual victory. Cullen (No. 5) and Blomberg (No. 4) also breezed through their first sets 6-0. Cullen closed out his win over Casear Serrano with a 6-4 score in the second set, while Blomberg won over Pablo Nunez 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Komada defeated Nick Tolomei, 6-2, 6-1, and after struggling at the beginning of the match, Olivarez made his way past Chris Cheung, 7-6, 6-0 (7-5), at No. 3. Calderone capped the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Latosinsky.
With their victories, Calderone improved his overall win total to 188, moving into fifth place in program history, and Cullen upped his total to 161, bumping him up to 18th.
Western Michigan travels to No. 25 Michigan Saturday for a 6 p.m. match against the Wolverines.
