University Arena Indoor Track Gets A Facelift

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the completion of a $525,000 renovation to the University Arena track surface and bleacher system.

The total cost of the track surface was $400,000 with the remaining going towards a revamping of the bleacher mechanics as well as two brand new automatic baseline bleachers. The surface is from the company MONDO, which handles both indoor and outdoor track surfaces around the world and will be featured at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

"You get what you pay for," said track and field head coach Kelly Lycan. "The administration's decision has assured that this surface will still look great long after I hang up my whistle. Beyond the excellent performance we will get out of the surface it just makes the whole arena look great."

"This will clearly help recruiting as well as training," Lycan added. "With a state like Michigan and the weather we experience during the winter as well as the beginning in the outdoor season this will definitely help."

The Broncos regularly hold a dual meet during the indoor season and the renovation will help the team keep up the tradition.
