BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team ended its two-match road trip to Western New York without a win as it fell to No. 59 Binghamton, 4-0, on Sunday morning on the campus of the University at Buffalo.
The No. 74 Broncos (16-8) battled the Bearcats (17-1) close, but couldn't pick up the victory against the America East powers.
For the second day in a row, junior Casey Cullen and sophomore Pablo Olivarez earned a victory at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, by beating Ruben Devos and Bastian Bornkessel. The Broncos had an opportunity to take the doubles point, but loss by just a break, 8-6, at both No. 1 and No. 2 to put BU on the board first, 1-0.
The Broncos dropped straight set decisions at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1), No. 1 (6-2, 6-2) and No. 2 (6-4, 6-2) in losing to the Bearcats. The match was played with a tournament format as the remaining matches were halted after the match was decided.
Western Michigan was battling in the remaining three matches that all featured a first set tiebreaker, but couldn't win any of them. Olivarez was leading in the second set, 3-1, at No. 3, as was sophomore Zeyad Montasser, 4-2, in the second set at No. 6.
The Broncos return to Kalamazoo for their next match on Saturday, April 10 at 1 p.m. against Ball State (13-7, 1-0 MAC). The match is scheduled for Sorensen Courts, weather permitting.
